The name Howlita comes from its discoverer, the chemist, geologist and mineralogist Henry How, Canadian who first described it in 1868, indicating the approximate chemical composition. Although it was discovered in Canada, today the main sources are USA, Canada, Turkey and Africa.

The Indians believed that the Howlita possessed the power of life and that it did not allow people to forget that humans, nature and animals belong together in a reciprocal harmony.

The natural Howlita is white and because of its porosity it is easily dyed yellow and salmon.
