Rock crystal, also known as hyaline quartz. Formerly called only crystal, "de-roca" has been added to distinguish it from crystal glass. The main deposits are in the US, Brazil, Madagascar and the Alps, in Europe.

In antiquity it was believed that rock crystal was an eternal ice.

The word crystal derives from krystallos, Greek word meaning "ice".
